A 32 for Super Metroid?

A 26 for Mega Man X?

What were they thinking?

Aren't there only like...11 or 12 Metroid games out there? You'd put Super Metroid in almost the bottom half of the series?

I think most people have Super and/or Prime as their top 2.

This is not a Gaf phenomenon. Everywhere you'll find clusters of game enthusiasts 25 or older you'll find people who rank Super Metroid on the short list of the greatest video games ever made.

I was watching my boy play F Zero and... boy it looks a basic game nowadays. But holy shit, that soundtrack man. Even though he was ping ponging around the track, it hyped everything up to make it feel like the greatest race that there ever was.

It took me right back to buying the SNES. The absolute magic of it all. Parts of LTTP keep hitting thatís emotional centre too - going to the Lost Woods, that first warp on Death Mountain, emerging in Sanctuary.

MegaMan X was the 7th MegaMan console game in 6 years. I can see how they can get tired if it. With Super Mario World, maybe Japan having a much longer build up to SMW made it feel more disappointing.

These are actually really agreeable scores, aside from MMX (way too low) and F-Zero (a bit too high). I'm surprised by how little I can complain about the ordered list. Nowadays, I treat Famitsu scores as more or less entirely nonsense, but it seems like they might have been fairly reliable once upon a time.

Because Super Metroid is indeed an unrivaled masterpiece in atmosphere and game design. No other 2D title grazes it in that regard.

Its only weak parts are the cumbersome combat and redundant controls. Combat in Super Metroid is a battle of attrition since Samus has really slow acceleration and enemies move in erratic patterns impossible to predict or dodge.

It's simply more apparent now as we just had a Metroid with excellent combat and enemy patterns.

In F-Zero's defense, it was a launch game along with Super Mario World for the Japanese Super Famicom. The game was released on November 21st, 1990, and to put things into context, there really wasn't anything like F-Zero on any other home console at the time. It was a visually impressive game with it's smooth 60fps Mode 7 scaling and incredibly responsive gameplay. The other major consoles on the market were the PC Engine (with CD) , Sega Mega Drive, and the original Famicom and didn't have any racing games that could compare.

Though interestingly enough Super Mario World was not given as high of praise because the game was criticized for being not much of an evolution over Super Mario Bros. 3 in many ways.

Star Fox got some high scores because of its technical achievements as well for using the SuperFX chip. It is a fun game too (honestly, one of my favorites on the system).

Final Fantasy VI well deserves that score. Honestly, it was epic in scope for a 16bit console game upon release.

I am a little disappointing with their Contra III review though...

I kinda wanna gang fight the Famitsu Megaman X reviewers with bottles and chains. How anyone could have given mediocre scores to the greatest game series of all time is beyond me.

But then I see that Final Fantasy 6 review and I kinda feel like they're redeemed. I'm conflicted.

You guys are too used to reviewers giving scores from 6 to 10. None of those scores are bad, even MMX's, which is just a little underrated.
Famitsu used to throw 3s, 4s and 5s like candy at the time, and 6 meant "not for everyone but good if you're a fan of the genre".

For one, Super is slow as hell, which is inexcusable after how fast and fluid Hyper Fighting feels.

Nonsense. The New Challengers has 4 turbo stars, same as Hyper Fighting without the cheat code. The 10 star speed in HF is ridiculous and takes all strategy and character speed nuances out of the game. It basically makes it a button masher worse than Tekken ever was.

Second, almost every character balance was actually a step *backwards* that made them worse than their Hyper Fighting incarnations. A small sample:

- Perhaps the biggest crime was Zangief, who lost the low invincibility on his 3K Lariat.
- Blanka got nerfed, his vertical rolling ball no longer hit on the way down as it used to in Hyper Fighting
- Boxer lost the ability to go through projectiles with 3P/3K move.
- Guile got punked, he sucks ass in Super

You forgot Ken's fierce DP which covers half the screen and completely destroys everyone's airgame. HF was an unbalanced mess and all those nerfs were necessary to get some actual balance.

I agree with LttP getting a 9 and SMW an 8.

Super Metroid however getting an 8 was nuts. I already considered it worthy of a 10 after beating it way back in the day, even/especially considering how I felt the original didn't hold up.

Why is 26/40 a bad score? Its basically 65/100, a fair score if I say so.

Perhaps MMX's score is also lower due to franchise fatigue. While its not the original series by any means, and was the first SNES game, there were still five NES Mega Mans released prior to it, and four GB ones.

Star Fox and F-Zero placing higher than they would have now though makes sense when you consider when they came out. Given their scores though, a bit surprising though that the DKC score is more subdued, since its graphics looked amazing back when it came out. Or at least they did to little kid me at the time. I guess they are just more impressed about 3D in the 2D era rather than just good graphics then.

Okay, back home so I can delve into these scores a bit more.

F-Zero: 10/8/9/10

Damn. Nothing against F-Zero, but that's pretty high for a racing game.

Super Ghosts and Ghouls: 7/7/7/6
Mega Man X: 7/6/6/7

MMX stays losing, sadly. And to SGaG no less.

I love MMX, but it really seems like one of those games that never got 9s and 10s.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past: 9/10/10/10

Well deserved.Very few complaints here.

Super Street Fighter II: 8/8/7/7

Another fairly low score considering how popular and influential it was.

Kirby Super Star: 9/8/7/8

Seems a bit low, but around an accurate ball park.

It did really well in EGM (the mag that adopted its ratings scheme, funnily enough), averaging a 9. The reviewers only criticized it for being too easy.

Another fairly low score considering how popular and influential it was.

SSFII was where the franchise started feeling too iterative, and as others said, had all the changes that didn't sit well for the most part.

SM got straight 9s in EGM. That was no mean feat back in those days, given the less hyperbolic nature of reviews back then.

Scoring Super Ghouls and Ghosts higher than MegaMan X almost invalidates the entire scoring system IMO. The two games are directly comparable, and it's like comparing high school football to the undefeated 19-0 Dolphins.

Probably the most ignorant GAF post I've read in hours. HF is widely considered the most balanced SF game, and many OGs have it as their favorite version of SFII, even over Super Turbo. SSFII is almost universally considered a step back from HF, despite the inclusion of the four extra characters.
