As a big fan of the Classic series that never liked X, I can understand that score. Too much focus on action instead of classic platforming.

Very interesting, some of these games are among the best games ever made in my opinion. These are the easy 10's in my book:

- Super Mario World
- Super Metroid
- A Link To The Past

How did NES Megamans score? Megaman X series is what I like to think of as a perfect jump to next gen. Takes the original concept, and literally upgrades, adds, and changes everything about the originals into something that feels very familiar, but is an entirely different beast thats worth playing and is a worthy successor.

Yoshi's Island score is way too high.

Well, Yoshi's Island is the better game. Plenty of more powers than SMW, its own unique brand of platforming, and an instantly recognizable and endearing children's storybook aesthetic. I love the hell out of Yoshi's Island. Before the recent Rayman games it was p. much the undisputed king of 2D platformers imo.

I say this at every possible opportunity, but GAF heavily overrates how well Super Metroid has aged. I'm not sure I'd even rank in the top 5 Metroid games.

No, only that Yoshi's Island has competition in my mind. Super Meat Boy is also a load of fun! I don't have a 'definite best platformer of all time' anymore.

Comparing F-ZERO and Mario kart makes a lot of sense considering Mario kart started out as a demand for 2 player F-ZERO. Course designs had to be changed due to technical issues and the smaller boxier courses looked like Go-Kart tracks.

Even more of a reason Capt Falcon should be in Mario kart.

A person liked a game a point less than you did decades ago, you're fine, it's not that serious.

Thanks for reminding how much I hate subtanks. I guess, maybe, they're sorta, somewhat functional if ya farm and / or never get hit? E-tanks were 1 use but ya could hold up to 9 I think? Plus going back into a stage to refill on 'em was never nearly as bad as subtankk farming. E-tanks for life!

Were you an enemy magnet or something? Aside from that one part in Sigma 1 (everyone knows which one I'm talking about), enemies are really easy to avoid. And if you're finding yourself too overwhelmed, there's always the super function of Chameleon Sting to bail you out of literally everything.

It's so interesting to read the contextual comments about what they thought at the time. I kinda felt the same way back when I first got a SNES about SMW. I thought it was good, but I was impressed with other games more... it took time for me to truly appreciate it, but appreciate it later I did.

8/8/8/8 for Super Metroid feels right to me. That game, like so many on the SNES showed how you could technically improve every aspect of a game, and create a polished and still fun game, yet still be a weaker experience. See also, Zelda 3, Super Mario World, and Super Punch Out. Outside of Nintendo developed games, Castlevania IV and Final Fantasy II and III also fell into the same trap. F-Zero is still a 10.

More recent examples include Mass Effect 2, and Destiny 2.

I def think this is one of those games that was more impressive if you were around or were able to get it when it released. Not saying its not still great, or that it doesn't hold up today, just that a lot of people who would be comparing it to a lot more recent games might not be able to see it for what it was. Myself included.

I'm not trolling. I prefer Zelda 1 and 2, OoT Majora's Mask and BOTW to Zelda 3, and yes, Metroid for the NES is my most nostalgic favorite.

100% agree, vanilla Super is by far the worst of the five Street Fighter II games. It was such a step back from Hyper Fighting, which essentially perfected the CPS-1 Street Fighter formula. For one, Super is slow as hell, which is inexcusable after how fast and fluid Hyper Fighting feels. Second, almost every character balance was actually a step *backwards* that made them worse than their Hyper Fighting incarnations. A small sample:

- Perhaps the biggest crime was Zangief, who lost the low invincibility on his 3K Lariat.
- Blanka got nerfed, his vertical rolling ball no longer hit on the way down as it used to in Hyper Fighting
- Boxer lost the ability to go through projectiles with 3P/3K move.
- Guile got punked, he sucks ass in Super

Etc etc...

Super Turbo pulled off a miracle and fixed an insane amount of stuff that they had messed up in vanilla Super. But yea, there was no way Super Turbo was coming to the SNES; I mean, the PlayStation and Saturn barely handle that game.

This seems crazy to me. I have always thought X was wayyy easier than the original 6. That's a big part of why I've always liked it. I could never beat the originals as a kid, without game genie. Never had much trouble at all with X.

Funny because I first played Super Metroid last year. I also played Zero Mission last year and Fusion this year. Super Metroid is easily the best among the three. I think Prime series aged more, tried Metroid Prime last year and got bored very quick.

idk. Couple of years ago I ran through the whole MM Anniversary Collection disc with about as much trouble as normal. Popped in the MMX AC disc and tried to get through X and just couldn't. Didn't even have the heart to try any of the others again!
