I'm sorry, what? Yikes.

To be fair, it does look like a stock photo though.

Now this is new. Hopefully this is from one of those outsourced companies that takes things straight from google search, rather than some sick joke.

Unless it was willful, in which case fuck that.

If you mistake the image that is the subject of this article

for a stock photo then you are just an idiot. There is no excuse for this.

That's absurd.

How?

There's so many stock image options, why use a real image? Who thought this was a good idea?

Am I the only one who doesn't think this is that bad? Developers have used and incorporated real photos of dead people for ages for textures and models. Car cash photos, burn victims, wounded soldiers.

I thought it was a screenshot from a film or TV show at first glance (and if I'd seen it in another context I may not have realised that it wasn't). The only thing that could've tipped me off that it wasn't is that it looks a bit too grainy for that but I can totally see how someone could think it wasn't real. But then again, I am an idiot. Apparently.

Sure, if you found the photo from that article. I do think it's a moment of incompetence from the Telltale artist that pulled it, but I don't think it was a knowing reference. There's just no reality where they found the article, read the article, and decided "yeah it'll be tasteful to use this actual murder victim as an asset in my fictional video game". I'm arguing about negligence vs purposeful wrong-doing.

To be completely fair, that photo looks in no way shape or form real.

it honestly does look like a stock photo, i had to do research to see that it's actually an image of a real dead man.

The assassination of the Russian ambassador to Turkey was a big deal, yes, and it happened 9 months ago. It's not some far flung event from the past. Being on gaming side doesn't give you license to be as ignorant as Telltale.

Reverse Image search is a thing now. Like ten seconds could have saved this person the incoming shitstorm coming for them.

This is an understandable line of thinking given how amazingly good the picture is. Problem is, that just means that the artist at Telltale thought they were plagiarizing a movie instead of an AP journalist. It's still plagiarism.

I think you're being incredibly generous with how many people in America would a) pay attention to that and b) recognize that event in the photo as an actual event.

I thought the main source of the outrage was that it was a real corpse. Didn't mean to excuse them using copyrighted material.

I really doubt artists reverse image search everything they use, that would take far too long when you're under the gun. Especially in this case when it looks to be a stock photo.

No, but also, like, if you're sourcing a photo for a project, you should at least know where the photo is from.

Also, the only way this could've happened is if the designer got the photo off of GIS. Doctoring the photo and using it in a commercial product is almost definitely violating whatever copyright the photographer has on the photo. He could probably sue Telltale for using it. What they SHOULD have done is just bought a generic photo off of a stock site.

As someone who works in the media industry this is basically photo editing 101. Using a photo you don't have the rights to is a recipe for disaster.

No but you would expect the artist and/or legal team to do the barest minimum of due diligence on any piece of work not internally created, so as prevent from things like this occurring.

If you're using a photo for a commercial product, you need to check the source to make sure you're not violating a copyright. A simple reverse search of the image would've probably brought that article up and it takes all of two seconds to do, just right click the image and click on "Search Google for this image."

The fact that this passed an editing process is a huge failure on Telltale's part. My boss would rake me and my editor through the coals if I did something like this at the site I work for.

Normally, a license fee would be involved for using the picture, but looking at Bioware with Mass Effect 3, if only partially edited it may escape the rights holders.

But rights aside, this is pretty distasteful for being a real person, and being a relatively recent event too.
