I'm not a Prime fan, either, but even I could tell at the time that there was really talented people at Retro. Their great work on DKCR was not a shock to me at all. Good design principles transcend genres and franchises. Always have.

so do bad ones, apparently.

metroid prime was pretty good at the technical stuff. it looked good, sounded great, and everything kinda worked all together pretty well. it's just boring to actually play.

dkcr is kinda the opposite in some ways. the technical stuff is iffy (lots of load times and fucked controls), and while it looks good, the presentation overall is lacking something. the level design in later levels is pretty good, but it only counts for less than half the game.

As much as I respect Anihawk, I think this is the only thing I disagree with him on. Metroid Prime is amazing.

You won't get disagreement out of me. But being boring and having bad design are 2 different things. One is subjective and the other isn't. For the type of game it is, it's quite well-designed. I just don't find that type of game compelling in the slightest. See my point?

Oh, definitely- at 40nm. Nobody said the case was final or that it couldn't be on a smaller process though.

Good stuff, found myself nodding my head through a lot of it. It's a very well-designed game made by a lot of very talented people, but it's just SO. DAMN. BORING. For a large variety of reasons that you pointed out pretty well.

Prime 1 was great IMO. It was around Prime 3 that they lost it when they tried too hard to please the action FPS crowd. Metroid was mostly about the solitude and atmosphere.

If only they expanded on the sequence breaking in Prime 1 rather than "fix" it, it would've been really good.

Going back to topic, so we undust the Google-Nintendo coding venture. I sort of remember this. But considering it uses x86 architecture, how does this plug in to what we've heard about the Wii U so far (aside, of course, from the ever-so-convenient Android support rumors)?

I can see what you're getting at. For me the atmosphere in that game was thick that it could have carried me through it blissfully without an enemy encounter for hours on end if it wanted to.

I have a very good memory association with Metroid Prime. When I got to the point in the laboratory where the Space Pirates attack Samus for the first time (en route to Phendrana, if I recall correctly), that menacing music began to play on the surround sound system's speakers. This, along with the sound effects of that scene, prompted Jake to fly off of the couch toward the TV, where he then proceeded to have a loquacious, multi-syllabic arguing match with the bad guys, breaking-up his yelling into sentences and words.

Such a good, protective guy. I rewarded him for this behaviour, so he repeated it a few times until finally figuring-out that they posed us no threat.

I never expected a smaller process tbh. Actually, at 40 - 45nm was my prediction all the time. Would be nice if they make it happen at 32nm
But I think that's pushing it.

Edit: reading wikipedia it says Intel began selling 32nm processors on January 7, 2010 so I think there's a possibility right? I mean, it is a known and tested technology. Just like what Nintendo loves to use

I loved the sequence breaking aspect of 1; that's one reason that it's my favorite. Getting those Space Jump Boots first made the game so incredibly different.

I cannot fathom why anybody would believe, or even hypothesise, that the Wii U is packing 6.5x+ performance of the current generation. I expect it to be more powerful than the 360/PS3, and I believe reports stating otherwise are misinformed and/or based on outdated memories, but the fact of the matter is these reports wouldn't exist at all if the system was that far ahead. When you're looking at a full generational leap of hardware, one comparable with mid-high end modern PCs, you're not going to mistake it for even in the ballpark of the last generation. It's not possible.

So the only other possibility is that Nintendo stuck a massively improved GPU in the system at the last minute. And given the usual process of R&D, testing, stability, and manufacturing, this is an incredibly risky, and thus unlikely, scenario.

Upgrades do happen, and so do downgrades. But not to the extent that the system's performance is entirely overhauled.

3x the performance of a 360 under most scenarios using modern architectures.

I consider that a lot of power. Always have. Hell I consider a 360 a lot of power. I think you're doing something wrong if your vision can't be accurately conceived on that level of tech.

We've "fought" enemies on the scale of a planet this generation. Seriously guys. How much more do you need?

Well they do leave behind certain ideas of the past that don't work that well in first person.

2D Metroid, especially later on, really picks up the pace of platforming as you gain new abilities. He admits the games are well designed, but they weren't what he was wanting in a new Metroid. I can't deny his point has merit, regardless of how much I enjoyed Retro's take on Metroid.

IBM East Fishkill/ Fab 5 is sampling 32NM now, with planned high volume production this Fall. This is the same location the CPU is being manufactured at. The timeline matches up, plus it's a joint global foundries (AMD spin off) venture. So yes, it's possible.

Like I said though, best to keep your expectations in check and count on 40nm and something maybe half that.

We need enough power to render individual hairs coming out of a wart on a bokoblin's ass. And they need to flow along with the direction of the wind. Or against the direction in which your character is running. Or along with the air being blown out of the Gust Bellows. You get the idea.

Wart-asshair live rendering. If a gaming system's hardware doesn't have this capability, its games will surely SUCK, as discriminating gamers will immediately be able to detect the inherent inferiority of such a game upon one quick glance at the TV screen. :)

Yeah 40nm is the safest bet but yeah as you say 32nm could happen. IBM did not begin shipping CPUs to Nintendo until September 2006 so there is the time still for the smaller process if it was planned

Ehhh, what he posted about Retro and Monolith Soft was bordering on flame bait. So either it's unintentional and he behaves that way by reflex or he's being a dick on purpose for laughs and to push the envelope. I naturally prefer to assume the latter, because if it were the former... well, that'd be a shame.

There may be some relationship here, and to be honest, I wouldn't rule something between Nintendo and Google out in this form. I never believed Android + Nintendo, ever, but some joint project or "NES OS" I can definitely see Nintendo working on, even if it doesn't end up being what they actually implement.

I am much more interested in the possibilities, specifically, how you made mention with Wii Speak or certain Control methods or whatever not programmed initially and thus preventing a "system wide" upgrade. That is exceptionally interesting, and something I can see Nintendo interested in.






As an aside, I am sad to read some of you didn't enjoy MP. Absolutely one of my favourite games of all time. One of the reasons I re-purchased a Wii was to play MP3 on it again, I really enjoyed the faster pace of that game. Each game had its charms, and proved to me Retro is one special developer. Nintendo sure know how to pick 'em.

Third party controller usually compete on basis of price, dont they? I can imagine it would be hard to compete in this case and be of a high enough quality to be worth a dam.
